Getting
to know the Colombian fruits, flowers and handicrafts.
In Colombia, it is a traditional custom to have a fruit juice
during meals. What makes this custom interesting is that
juices are made from fruits which are unknown to the rest of
the world (with strange names such as “curuba”,
“lulo”, “zapote”, “guanábana”, “pithaya”,
“uchuva”, “feijoa”, “níspero”, “tamarindo”,
“maracuyá” (passion fruit), etc.). You can always get
fresh fruit at the market. Also, there is an enormous variety
of handicrafts and flowers. Colombia is the country with the
greatest variety of orchids and exotic flowers in the whole
world.)
Cycle
tour of the entire city.
Many
years ago, it was decided by local authorities that on Monday
mornings the city’s main streets would be used exclusively
as cycle ways. The custom prevails today and due to the
initial success of the project many cycle ways were built into
a network covering all the city, to be used on a permanent basis for this ecological and cheap
form of transport. Also
some years ago, the inhabitants of Bogotá got a commitment
with the environment. Eight million inhabitants voted on
public election supporting the “automobile-free” day,
which takes place once a year.
On that day, it is common to see all kinds of people
going on bicycle or on foot to their place of work or study.
